●Is a corset the same thing as a back brace or a weight lifting belt?

I always thought a corset was something that overweight women used to wear in the 1800s to make themselves look trim.

Turns out I was right. Well, sort of.

According to my electronic dictionary, the corset was primarily in fashion in the mid 19th century. Any high school European history textbook wouldn't be complete without at least one photo of some corset-wearing English lady with a six-inch diameter waist.

However, a corset is also commonly used in the medical world. People with severe back pain are sometimes prescribed a "corset" by their doctor.

Well then, how is it different than a regular "back support belt" or "lifting belt?" The major difference is that a corset is designed toinhibitmovement andimmobilizethe spine. Kind of like having your torso frozen in carbonite like Han Solo. Back support belts allow for varying degrees of movement, from simply being able to bend your back to playing golf or jogging.

I learned something new today.

I’ve recently started a blog, the information you provide on this site has helped me tremendously. Thank you for all of your time & work.

Great site. A lot of useful information here. I’m sending it to some friends!

Back pain is really so difficult to remedy, in certain cases, yoga exercise is a great option for pain relief.
